The three Commonwealth lines

The Australian Government’s first home buyers site groups its help into three programs: the First Home Super Saver Scheme, the 5% Deposit Scheme and the Help to Buy Scheme.

First Home Super Saver

Extra voluntary contributions to super, later released towards a first home. As at October 2026, up to $15,000 a year and $50,000 in total.

5% Deposit Scheme

Formerly the Home Guarantee Scheme. A government guarantee to the lender: a minimum 5% deposit for first home buyers, or 2% for single parents and legal guardians, with no income caps since 1 October 2025.

The single parent pathway

Help to Buy

Shared equity: a minimum 2% deposit, with the Government contributing up to 30% of an existing home or 40% of a new one.

How the share works

The 5% Deposit Scheme and Help to Buy cannot be used together. Stamp duty relief is a separate line run by each state and territory, set out on platform 5. Which schemes combine is on platform 6.
